General Information

We believe elephants deserve a life filled with love, respect, and proper care. That's why we created this sanctuary: a safe haven where elephants can roam freely in their natural environment. It's also a place for you to truly understand and connect with these magnificent animals in an ethical way.

Elephants are incredibly significant to Thailand, holding immense natural, cultural, and spiritual value. Conserving them isn't just about protecting a single species; it's about safeguarding our nation's heritage and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Unfortunately, Thai elephants face many threats today, including shrinking habitats, conflicts with human communities, and exploitation in industries without adequate care. Genuine conservation efforts must address these challenges through education, proper healthcare, improved welfare standards, and raising public awareness about the vital role elephants play.

At Phuket Elephant Care, we're dedicated to conservation through natural care. This means we promote behaviors that align with an elephant's natural way of life and create a respectful environment where both elephants and people can thrive together.

Please check our programs page for complete details.

Elephants are far more than just magnificent creatures; they are deeply woven into the fabric of Thailand's natural environment, rich cultural traditions, and historical narrative. They symbolize strength, wisdom, and loyalty, holding a revered place in our society.

Ecologically, elephants are true "gardeners of the forest." Their natural plant-eating habits are crucial for maintaining the health and balance of forest ecosystems. By dispersing seeds and creating pathways, they facilitate the growth of new vegetation, contributing to biodiversity.

Culturally and historically, elephants have played a pivotal role in Thai life for centuries. From their traditional use in agriculture and grand ceremonies to their current significance in ethical tourism, they are an inseparable part of local communities and traditions.

Therefore, our efforts to protect and conserve elephants at Phuket Elephant Park are not just about safeguarding a species. They are about preserving a living symbol of Thailand's natural beauty and profound cultural heritage for generations to come.

Elephants hold a profound and cherished place in Thai culture and history. Far more than just the national animal, they symbolize strength, prosperity, and royalty.
Historically, elephants were indispensable in various aspects of Thai life:

  • Warfare: They served as powerful mounts in battles, strategically important to ancient kingdoms.
  • Labor & Transportation: Their strength was vital for logging and moving goods, especially in challenging terrain.
  • Royal & Religious Ceremonies: White elephants, in particular, were considered sacred and auspicious, reserved exclusively for the monarch and believed to bring prosperity to the kingdom.
You'll find their majestic presence woven throughout Thai art, literature, and folklore, showcasing the deep reverence the Thai people have for these magnificent animals.
Today, while their roles have shifted, elephants remain central to Thai identity and significant conservation efforts. Reputable elephant care centers like ours are dedicated to their welfare, offering visitors a chance to learn about these incredible creatures, support ethical care, and contribute to their long-term preservation.

Elephants are remarkable herbivores! They have a unique digestive system called "hindgut fermentation." This means that while they eat a massive amount of plant material – about 7-10% of their body weight daily (around 300 kg!) – their digestion isn't perfectly efficient. Instead, beneficial microorganisms in their large intestine and rectum work hard to break down the tough cellulose in plants like grasses, leaves, fruits, bark, and branches.
At Phuket Elephant Park, our elephants enjoy a diverse and nutritious diet mirroring their natural foraging habits. This typically includes:

  • Fresh Grass and Fodder: The staple of their diet, providing essential fiber.
  • Various Leaves and Branches: Sourced locally to offer variety and natural enrichment.
  • Fruits: Such as bananas, pineapples, and watermelons, provided as treats and supplementary nutrition.
  • Vegetables: Including cucumbers and pumpkins, which are also enjoyed

This can vary from day to day. In the high season from November to April, our tours experience the highest demand. We ensure an intimate experience by limiting each tour to a maximum of 30 visitors. For those seeking a more personalized experience, we highly recommend our Serene Boutique Elephant Park tour, which is a half-day private offering.

While possible, twin elephant pregnancies are exceptionally rare, occurring in only about 1% of births. Sadly, the survival rate for twin elephant calves is often very low. Interestingly, Thailand was home to a remarkable event in March 2005 when the world's first documented pair of male twin elephants was born in Surin Province, a momentous occasion that garnered significant attention from elephant conservationists worldwide.

A reliable weather forecast for Phuket is almost impossible, especially during the monsoon season. Phuket is located at the coastline of the Andaman Sea, where the weather can change very fast. It can be a fantastic sunny day in Phuket Town, but only a few kilometers away at Naithon Beach, it could be heavy rain. The weather right now does not have any bearing on the weather next week, or even tomorrow! Check the weather forecast with Wunderground or Accuweather, but during the monsoon months, only the forecast for the next 2 – 3 days is reliable - long term weather is very difficult to predict.

We offer a variety of elephant care experiences, so you can choose the one that best suits your interests – from learning about elephant behavior and interacting with them in a safe environment, to helping prepare their meals and observing their natural behaviors. Check all of our programs here.

No matter the weather, our doors are open! Elephants, for one, find rainy days delightful. They splash and frolic in the cool mud, creating a spectacle you won't want to miss. Fret not if the skies open up – we'll provide rain ponchos and umbrellas to keep you dry while you enjoy the fun.

Phuket is known for its hot and sunny weather! Whether it's humid or dry, be sure to stay sun-safe by bringing a hat and sunscreen. Don't worry about staying hydrated - we'll provide chilled purified water throughout the tour to keep you cool and refreshed.

For the safety and well-being of our animals, drone flights are not permitted on our premises. Drones can be startling to wildlife, including our elephants.

Your voucher will contain an emergency phone number which you can call in case of any problems before or during the trip. You can also contact us using the email address info@elephantspark.org.
